How does an air source heat pump work?

Air source heat pumps (ASHP’s) are an innovative type of heating system that use a refrigerant to absorb heat from the outside air and move it indoors, this heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems and provide domestic hot water in your home.

  1. Heat Absorption: The outdoor unit of an ASHP contains a coil filled with a refrigerant. This refrigerant absorbs heat from the outside air, even in low temperatures.
  2. Heat Compression: The refrigerant is then compressed by a pump, which increases its temperature.
  3. Heat Transfer: The hot refrigerant is transferred to the indoor unit, where it releases its heat to the indoor air via another coil and a fan system.
  4. Heat Distribution: The warm air is distributed throughout the home.
  5. Refrigerant Cycle: The refrigerant, now cooled, is cycled back to the outdoor unit to absorb more heat, and the process repeats.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants to encourage property owners to replace existing fossil fuel heating with more efficient, low carbon heating systems, such as air source heat pumps. This scheme offers a grant of £7500.00 towards the overall cost of the installation.

  4. Installation of the Unit: An ASHP is installed outside your home, the unit can be fitted to a wall or placed on the ground. It will need plenty of space around it to get a good flow of air.
